The Red Death = Tuberculosis?

As I was reading "The Masque of the Red Death," I couldn't help but remember how Poe's wife Virginia died of tuberculosis. Perhaps Poe's personal experiences with disease and death had an impact on how and why this story was written. Thoughts?

  1. Poe's personal experiences definitely affected his writing. In the section on Virginia's health, the biography connects Poe's experience and "The Masque of the Red Death," saying,

The "Mask of the Red Death" is about Prince Prospero, who abandons his country in order to save himself and his aristocratic friends from an instantly fatal disease. Both stories ["Mask of the Red Death" and "Life in Death"] show a denial of and a struggle with death, reflecting Poe's refusal to realize the seriousness of Virginia's condition.

The Red Death could symbolize tuberculosis because of the symbolism of blood both diseases share. Virginia, with tuberculosis, would be bleeding at the mouth while she sang, as the biography says, and the Red Death was "hideous," with "redness" and "horror of blood."

  2. By the way, pretend that middle paragraph is like a block quotation, indented and everything.

  3. If the Red Death is tuberculosis, does that mean that Poe thinks he is the Prince, trying to hide himself away from the disease?

  4. I don't think Poe is the Prince because the Prince was completely awful at caring for those suffering, while Poe really cared for his wife and tried to help her.

  5. Even if Poe thought that he was Prince Prospero, the prince still gets killed at the end of the story. Again, emphasizing the idea that death is inevitable and that nobody can go against nature.

  6. My name is hoover, my 18 year old daughter, Tricia was diagnosed with herpes 3 years ago. Since then, we have moved from one hospital to another. We tried all kinds of pills, but every effort to get rid of the virus was futile. The bubbles continued to reappear after a few months. My daughter was using 200mg acyclovir pills. 2 tablets every 6 hours and 15g of fusitin cream. and H5 POT. Permanganate with water to be applied twice a day, but all still do not show results. So, I was on the internet a few months ago, to look for other ways to save my only son. Only then did I come across a comment about the herbal treatment of Dr Imoloa and decided to give it a try. I contacted him and he prepared some herbs and sent them, along with guidance on how to use them via the DHL courier service. my daughter used it as directed by dr imoloa and in less than 14 days, my daughter recovered her health.
